Product Review: Urban Decay Skyscraper Multi-Benefit Mascara

Urban Decay's Skyscraper Multi-Benefit Mascara ($22 US for the full-size version) can be best described as "fair to middling." You wouldn't know it from the copywritten blurb on the Sephora website, though: This mascara promises to lengthen, volumize, and nourish lashes without clumping or flaking, and the brush boasts a unique flexible bristle design. These claims are further bolstered by the dozens of user reviews claiming this is the Holy Grail of mascaras.

Unfortunately, in the 1-2 weeks that I used the sample size tube, I found it to be fairly disappointing. I liked the slick packaging design and the narrow tube opening which scraped excess formula off the wand as I pulled it out of the tube; this probably went a long way in preventing clumps. The brush boasts the same sort of molded flexible plastic bristles found on cheaper drugstore mascaras like Cover Girl LashBlast and LashExact. Unlike its inexpensive but excellent counterparts, though, Urban Decay's mascara began drying out and flaking and clumping after about a week. By the end of the second week, I had to stop using it because I couldn't tolerate the hassle of combing out clumps post-application.

Have you tried Urban Decay's Skyscraper Multi-Benefit Mascara? What do you think of it?

  2. I love your product reviews.

I've only tried the coloured Urban Decay mascara. It was ok for what it was: PURPLE!

Have you tried Kiss Me Mascara yet? One of my top 3.

Unfortunately, I have really sensitive eyes so most of the time I skip mascara all together.

  3. Anya, I've tried that one and reviewed it here. In a nutshell, I found that it was good but not quite perfect--not as smudge- or flake-proof as it claimed to be.

  4. Thanks for the review! Mascara is the only piece of makeup I routinely buy due to their short lifespan, and I love trying new ones so I enjoy your mascara review posts very much :) Have you tried other drugstore ones other than the L'Oreal Double Extend? (I remember reading your review for it.) I'm very unwilling to shell out anything more than $10 for mascara so I only buy drugstore ones, but I find that some work very well, so if you don't find any that work for you from the Sephora set, there's always cheaper drugstore alternatives that might be better! :)

  6. I've only ever tried UD lip products and nail polishes, but I'm not surprised the mascara was only so-so. In my experience, the only mascaras that are decent are the Maybelline/L'Oreal variety or the tried and trusted Lancomes/Chanel and MAC. I've never had much luck with the in-between brands and even many of the higher end ones weigh down the lashes too much.

  7. Haven't tried it, and I most certainly won't be. Sounds pretty crappy.

  8. I really like this Japanese one Imju Fiberwig Fibre. When you put it on, it puts a long extended coat on your lashes, so it actually looks like you're wearing extensions. When you wipe if off, you could actually see the mascara come off in teeny tiny tube shapes.

  9. I haven't used this but I am pretty hardcore-obsessed with my Dior Show Mascara. I can't tell you how rich and stunning my feeble eyelashes look with just one coat of this mascara.
