As I said in this post, I really tried to minimize my luggage for Portland. The desire to pack less had a number of reasons behind it: We were sharing a car with friends intent on doing serious tax-free shopping; I'm always mildly annoyed when I overpack; and the boy and I were sharing the same duffle bag for all our belongings.

As it turns out, some shrewd choices go a long way. A bright, lightweight scarf kept me cozy on the road and added a much needed dose of colour to an otherwise neutral ensemble. The white blazer, soft cotton tee, and cuffed jeans I wore for the long hours in the car were polished enough for an evening out with a sparkly necklace, whimsical clutch, and bright lip colour. A patterned skirt and lace-embellished tee proved perfect for walking around and shopping on a sunny day with temperatures in the mid-twenties. (My outfit the next day was a variation of the latter.) And then, of course, there's the thrill of wearing new purchases, always a fun and clever way to stretch a travel wardrobe. For my last night in Portland, I wore my new sequin tee with the white blazer and jeans.

Are you a minimalist when you travel?

  1. That clutch in the third photo is just so adorable! I'm also drooling over that striped Anthro dress. I've tried to pack more minimally on trips lately too - my problem is always shoes, I always feel like I'll need way more shoes then I ever end up using!

    1. Shoes are a problem for me too! I was only gone 2 nights, but managed to bring along 3 pairs of shoes. (Not shown: my Latin ballroom heels for salsa dancing.)
