Latest Outfit: Back to Basics

An outfit composed of basics: stripes, denim, black blazer, nude wedges, a black tote, and some sparkle
J. Crew schoolboy blazer, necklace (c/o), and wedges | Joe Fresh shirt (c/o) | Banana Republic jeans | Longchamp Le Pliage bag | Beausoleil glasses

I recently purged my closet. Two huge trash bags earmarked for donation and some hard thinking later, I've arrived at some uncomfortable conclusions:

1. I'm easily overwhelmed when there is too much stuff. Call it an anti-hoarding tendency, but anytime my shoe collection creeps above a certain threshold, or my sweater drawer can barely close because it's crammed with knitwear, I get antsy.

2. I feel unhappy when confronted with things I don't wear. Lately whenever I've scanned my accessories drawer or rifled through a pile of shirts or skirts, it gives me one big anxiety-inducing guilt trip.

3. The closet I have doesn't reflect the life I lead. Most days, I want to look and feel effortlessly pulled together by wearing well-loved, dependable pieces like these ones here. Tops that only seem go with certain bottoms or vice versa, and accessories that don't seem to go with anything, are just excess to fuss over and choke on.

4. I really need to buy less and break out of this vicious cycle of buy-purge-buy-purge.

  1. I can totally, totally empathise Lisa - especially with the getting overwhelmed by too much stuff in the closet. I don't know how people with 200 pairs of shoes do it! I'm also trying to get out of the buy-purge-buy-purge cycle... and have been for the past year and a half. It's a slow procsess, to be sure. But it does get a little easier :)

  2. Love the outfit! You did well to keep these particular items. I totally relate to your closet anxiety. I'm purging now, too, especially with the changeover in seasons. It's a never-ending battle. Am getting better but still have too much stuff.

  3. I'm awful at this buy-purge cycle. I'll feel so good and accomplished after a huge clearout -- how else would I reward myself? A new piece, of course.

    1. Haha I'm embarassed to admit, after the clean-out I checked the J. Crew Factory website and saw they were having a 50% off. A new pair of sandals and statement necklace may be making their way to my doorstep...
