My Fragrance Favourites

Fragrance faves: Miss Dior Hair Mist and Blooming Bouquet, AERIN Ikat Jasmine and Rose de Grasse, Chanel Beige

As I've gotten older, I've found myself veering away from very obvious gourmand perfumes with vanilla notes, or generic "fresh" scents which all smell more or less the same to my uneducated nose. Now I find myself seeking light yet sophisticated and distinctive fragrances, like these five tried-and-true favourites.

1. Miss Dior Hair Mist ($52) is my first foray into the burgeoning category of hair fragrances, and I like it. At first I was skeptical about the idea of wearing fragrance in your hair, but it does give you a completely different—and invigorating—fragrance experience. When you wear perfume on your pulse points, it creates a cloud of scent in your personal space so that those who are close to you can smell it. When you wear perfume in your hair, it creates that same cloud of scent close to your own nose so you can enjoy it all day long.

2. I've never tried a fragrance quite like AERIN Ikat Jasmine ($125): papery and delicate, and so unique with its jasmine and tuberose notes that the first time I wore it, the boy noticed (which he never does!) and asked me what perfume it was. It's since become his favourite on me.

3. I've always found Chanel No. 5 too overpowering for my sensibilities, but Chanel Beige ($280; available at Holt Renfrew) is subtle and discreet, with sensuality and depth to it. The Chanel website describes it as "a bouquet of Hawthorn, Freesia and Frangipani, with shimmering hints of honey." One of these days when my tiny sample runs out, I'll have to splurge for the full size.

4. I first encountered AERIN Rose de Grasse ($185) at the Estee Lauder media preview, and was so enamored with the layered depths of this ultra-luxe, rose-on-rose fragrance that I couldn't stop breathing it in appreciatively. That's saying a lot considering I usually find rose scents one-dimensional and old-ladyish. I may spring for the gold-and-marble bottle when my sample runs out, which would be a stunning addition to the vanity.

5. Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet ($82) is a light floral-with-a-twist; I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something playful and compelling about it that I don't find with other fresh florals. I like spritzing this one on during warmer months.

What are your fragrance favourites?

  1. I've been wanting to try Chanel's Beige for a while now and may have to make the splurge! My go-to is Coco Noir by Chanel and my mom wears No. 5 :)
