Product Review: Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50

Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50

As if UVA/UVB rays and pollution weren't enough to contend with skincare-wise, did you know you should also be worried about High Energy Visible (HEV) light? HEV light is the blue light emitted from the screens on your devices, and it inhibits your skin's ability to self-repair and accelerates aging. This is bad news if, like me, you can't seem to put down your phone or iPad, you're addicted to Netflix, and you log countless hours in front of a computer at work or blogging. Normal sunscreens won't block out HEV light—you'll need antioxidants for that—which is why Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50 ($74) is pure genius.

Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50 is not your typical sunscreen. It combines "antiadhesion, anti-penetration and antioxidation along with powerful UVA/UVB filters" to protect skin from the harmful effects of pollution and sun, but its antioxidation benefits can also help skin with HEV light.

Honestly, I was skeptical of this product's claims when I first received the sample many months ago. Sun protection is easy to measure, but how would I be able to test its efficacy against pollution and oxidation? Recently though, I'd noticed that blemishes were taking weeks, if not months, to heal. Reading about the effects of HEV light was a major "Aha!" moment. If I wanted healthier skin, I'd need to give my complexion an antioxidant boost to counteract all that screen time, and I was counting on Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50 to provide just that.

I love the fact that I don't have to remember to apply a separate antioxidant serum by using Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50; one product gives me long-lasting antioxidant and UVA/UVB protection—so convenient. The milky emulsion has a silky, lightweight texture that feels like next to nothing when applied. The formula hydrates and leaves a velvety, radiant finish with zero chalkiness, and a little goes a long way. (Shake well before you apply though!)

In the last 1.5 months of using it, there's been a noticeable improvement in my skin: it looks firmer, refreshed, and better rested. Best of all, I haven't been getting the angry, inflamed blemishes I usually get around the time of the month. The one little blemish I did get near my nose healed very quickly and didn't leave a mark. Yes, Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50 has a price that might make you wince. But for AM-to-PM protection from sun, pollution, and HEV light, I say it's totally worth it.
