Drugstore Delight: Cover Girl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick

Cover Girl x Katy Kat Matte lipstick Katy Perry collaboration

So far during Lipstick Week on Solo Lisa, we've covered luxury lippies and chic natural ones. But sometimes what a beauty lover really craves is a good Drugstore Delight, and if that's the case with you, Cover Girl Katy Kat Matte Lipstick ($9.99 at London Drugs) may be just the ticket. The PR samples landed on my beauty desk during the summer, but with the craziness of the wedding I haven't been able to appreciate the formula and packaging fully until now. All the details after the jump!

The packaging and branding are arguably the most eye-catching aspects of this Cover Girl x Katy Perry collaboration. The squared-off, black-and-white lipstick caps have a fun, graphic vibe and a silicone-y texture that feels soft to the touch. You can flip over the lipstick to see the shade underneath. I love the bold typography, the little heart in between "Katy Perry" and "Cover Girl," and the cat ears graphic on the shade name stickers.

The cat motif extends to the adorable names for each colour. There are 11 shades in all ranging from nudes and pinks to red, fuchsia, and more avant garde hues like purple and black. I've swatched them all below for your viewing pleasure.

Light shades

Aren't these pretty? Neutral, totally wearable for everyday, and great for brightening up the face. Swatched from left to right: 'Sphynx' (the nude shade of the collection); 'Coral Cat' (a balanced coral—not too warm or cool—with just a bit more orange than pink to it); 'Pink Paws' (a cool bubblegum pink); and 'Catoure' (a very sophisticated mauve-y pink).

Bright shades

Consider these go-to hues when you want a pop of colour without going too crazy. Swatched from left to right: 'Magenta Minx' (a cooler fuchsia); 'Crimson Cat' (a blue-based red and the only true red in the collection); and 'Cat Call' (a brilliant fuchsia warmer than 'Magenta Minx').

Vampy shades

Despite how intimidating these look in the tube and swatched on the hand, they're sheerer on (i.e. you can see your lips' natural colour underneath). You can layer them over other lip colours to make them cooler or darker, or if you want a truer colour apply primer or concealer first. The colours don't really work on me other than 'Maroon Meow', but maybe one of them will float your boat? Swatched from left to right: 'Cosmo Kitty' (a light orchid purple); 'Maroon Meow' (a vampy wine/plum that reminds me of Tom Ford's 'Bruised Plum'); 'Perry Panther' (a demi-matte black); and 'Kitty Purry' (a sheer lavender).

Despite the name, Katy Kat Matte is more of a demi-matte than a matte lipstick. It's got a little shine, and it's pigmented enough to tint your lips but just sheer enough to enhance your lips' natural colour instead of completely hiding it. The formula feels comfortable on the lips with plenty of slip, even when worn and re-applied throughout the day, and the bullet is cut well for straight-from-the-tube applications. Personally, 'Catoure' is my favourite shade (it's a lovely "my lips but better pink" suitable for the office) and my recommendation if you want to play it safe. But at less than $10 a pop, why not experiment and get a colour outside your comfort zone? Katy Kat Matte is purrfect for doing just that.
