Product Review: Dove Beauty Bar

Confession: Since the age of 9 or 10, I've been unusually prejudiced against Dove Beauty Bar. I saw loads of ads touting the advantages of Dove over run-of-the-mill soap and begged my mom to buy it for me. My only memories of Dove were that I didn't like the smell of it, and the 1/4 moisturizer lotion formula that the company was so proud of left a greasy-feeling residue on my skin. I've never cared for it since. So when the publicist for Dove Beauty Bar contacted me via email and offered me free samples to test and review, I took it as a chance to re-examine my preconceived notions and said yes.

A quick run-down on the product before I launch into my impressions of it: Dove Beauty Bar was first introduced to the American public in 1957 and to Canada in 1964. Its mild formulation claims to clean skin effectively while replenishing it with moisturizing lipids--all without stripping skin of its oils or leaving behind soap scum. The formula is safe enough to use on the face apparently. (I didn't try this as I'm pretty happy with my current cleanser and I worried the moisturizer lotion in Dove would wreak havoc on my breakout-prone skin.)

After using it for the past month, I'm perfectly happy to throw all of my prejudices against Dove Beauty Bar out the window. The fragrance of the classic white bar is still pretty strong, and the product does leave behind a slightly greasy feeling because of its lotion content. However, it lathers up wonderfully in the shower--as well as a body wash and a lot better than the soap I was using before. Plus, it doesn't leave behind the slippery "didn't rinse away completely" feeling that my old soap sometimes did. I noticed a marked difference in my skin after about two weeks when I didn't need to apply as much lotion as I used to. So maybe the greasy/lotiony formulation is working as claimed! I would definitely buy this product again.

Have you tried Dove beauty bar? What do you think of it? Any diehard Dove users out there?

  1. I don't know if I'm a diehard fan, but I've been using Dove bar soaps my entire life. I didn't even realize how a lot of people seem to prefer gel soaps over bars. You're right about the lather, it's amazing. It works well on my skin and I've never had any problems (dryness, irritation). When I'm feeling too lazy, I even use it as a eye makeup remover in the shower. I've never noticed the greasy after-feeling, but maybe I am using a different type of bar. Dang, maybe I am a diehard fan after all! :D

P.S. a bit offtopic but you should try LUSH's Honey I Washed the Kids soap. AMAZING. I'd be using this bar everyday for the rest of my life, but it's a bit rough on the wallet.

  3. I've been a diehard fan of dove body wash for years. I'm still recovering from their new fragrances (EW, classic please! I don't want to smell like a flower!) but seriously, this stuff helps out my skin so much (being a barista, it is generally in really bad condition) and I love it so. I also have 100% less issues with shaving and getting cuts and scrapes since I started using Dove Body wash as my shaving cream. It's awesome! :)

  7. I started using this after an allergic reaction that got worse with other soaps. The neutral formula worked really well while getting over the reaction. And with my oily skin, its rarely caused breakouts.

  9. I haven't tried the Beauty Bar but I've been considering it. For some reason I positively loathe putting lotion on my body so I'm always looking for moisturizing bath products. I have a moisturizing body wash that I think is from Dove and it works really well!

  10. I've been using Dove beauty bar for a few years now and I love it...for my body that is. It hasn't been all that great for my face lately. I guess that's why they say to never use soap on your face...cleanse, tone, moisturize-ugh what a hassle!
