Introducing Mel Shoes

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be coveting a pair of plastic shoes (no, not even when the original Melissa x Vivienne Westwood collaboration came out). But then again plastic shoes have come a long way since the jelly sandals of our childhoods. Cheap, chic and cheerful, Mel Shoes are just the thing for adding a dose of fun to your summer outfits. Like the shoes from older sister brand Melissa, Mel shoes are made from a flexible recyclable plastic known as melflex which is injected into a mold. Expect sweet candy colours and whimsical motifs like oversize hearts, bows and butterflies, as well as the superior design and quality that Brazilian brand Melissa has been known for since 1979.

In Vancouver, select Mel Shoes styles are available at Lola Home & Apparel. (I lost my heart to the nude pair in the top left corner when I was in there last week.) Get a pair before they're gone!

  2. I too remember wearing yellow jelly plastic shoes for most of my 12th summer, but not ever after that. I don't know, I feel like plastic shoes would be either be hot or painful. Did you buy the nude pair, Are they comfortable?

  4. Really cute shoes. I thought that I would never be caught in crocs until I picked up a pair that reminded me of jelly shoes. I am now in love with them because they are so comfy.

  5. Liz, they didn't have my size in the nude pair unfortunately.

Paula, I think some of the pairs that they have left might be in your size!

  7. Really cute. I have a pair of Melissa rubber booties and they are such a great alternative to rain boots. Especially in Vancouver!

  8. I miss the days of jellies! I've been toying with the idea of getting a pair of westwoods, but I'm worried that my feet would get sweaty in plastic shoes. Let me know how yours feel once you get them broken in.

  10. How comfortable are they? I feel like they would be really painful! My favourites are the ones you picked too and I've always been curious about those Melissa x Vivian Westwoods, but I fear for my feet!

Anyway, have a great weekend Lisa!

  11. Cath and Jen, I didn't buy a pair, but one of my friends has a pair of the Melissa x Vivienne Westwood heels and she wears them often because they're one of her more comfortable pairs of shoes.

  13. 12 years old! That is quite the bond you've got going on!

I will admit I am still a major fan of The Gap basket weave jelly sandal of my youth. I even found a brand new pair whilst thrifitng and HAD to purchase them. I love that they are almost impossible to ruin.

  16. I'm just wondering if they're easier to break because they're plastic. I love the butterfly detail on the sandals. Must swing by Lola soon. Thanks for the post!

  17. They look amazing, but my feet are in the world of pain after wearing them for a day. And i spent 80 percent of my day sitting down. Pain is the worst in the heal :(
