Drugstore Delight: Avene Cleansing Foam

Avene Cleansing Foam

I've tried my share of cleansing waters, jellies, balms and oils, but there is something atavistically satisfying about a foaming face wash. Maybe it's the way the texture taps into nostalgic comfort and familiarity? Something about a sudsy face cleanser reminds me of younger and more carefree days, tickling the same pleasure centres in my lizard brain as teen rom-coms and Disney movies and Oreos. It just feels good and I can't explain why. Evidently the skincare geniuses at Avene felt the same way, because instead of making a jelly-like cleanser for sensitive skin, they gave us Avene Cleansing Foam ($23 at London Drugs).

Avene Cleansing Foam is not like the harsh sulphate- and astringent-laden sudsy cleansers of your teen years. It's soap-free, hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. Plus, the first ingredient in the list is Avene Thermal Spring Water, which is notoriously soothing and moisturizing and therapeutic for problematic skin.

The foaming dispenser produces a voluminous, cloud-like puff of product. This face wash is scented, but it's more like the light "classic clean" fragrance you'd find in baby shampoo or baby lotion, not obnoxious or overwhelming at all. For the last couple of weeks I've been massaging the foam into my face and neck during my PM cleanse, in the shower, or after an at-home barre class, and it's been a comforting sensory delight each and every time. The packaging says it can remove makeup, but I'd recommend using micellar water to take off makeup and stubborn sunscreen first, then following up with the cleansing foam for a thorough double-cleanse.

  1. Your comment about this foamy cleanser reminding you about your younger days got me thinking about those Olay cleansing sheets, the ones where it comes dry and then you add some water and it would foam up. I used to be obsessed with those for some reason. I'm surprised the Avene cleanser is scented though - I thought if it's good for sensitive skin it wouldn't include fragrance.

    1. I remember those cleansing sheets! I think I tried them once, but they never really did it for me. As for the scent of the cleanser--that surprised me too. My theory is that the fragrance in the Avene cleanser is similar to the fragrance that's added to baby oil/shampoo/lotion. Baby skin would be quite delicate and sensitive too, but the scent in those products doesn't irritate.
