Event Snapshots: Vancouver Fashion eZine, H&M Grand Opening, Birks x Steve Nash x Roberto Coin Launch

Whew, it's been a busy few weeks! Work and writing deadlines and a slew of events have kept me on the go. Here's a quick look at what I've been up to.

A new print edition, a new name: Two weeks ago, Vancouver Fashion eZine presented its third annual print collectible with a fun launch party at JC Studios for advertisers, well-wishers, and anyone who had been involved with the magazine. I spent most of my evening chatting with these great people: Yves Gauthier, Jenny's fiance; Jenny Yen, one half of the Two of Hearts design duo; Fiona Louie, jewelry designer behind Filou and L'arbre Love; Jim, Fiona's husband; and the boy, whom I actually managed to drag out to an event me.

Tabitha Savoie, the other half of Two of Hearts, posing for a photo with Jenny.

Co-founders Marilyn Wilson and the rather more elusive Renat Toichev said a few words before they presented awards and raffle prizes. The evening was also punctuated by fashion shows.

Since September 2011 marked my last month as a contributor at Vancouver Fashion eZine, Marilyn presented me with a book of my own tearsheets as a parting gift: 20 articles over almost 3 years. Such a sweet gift.

From the local to the international: Some of Vancouver's most stylish ventured to Metropolis At Metrotown last week to celebrate the opening of the vast new H&M store there. Plenty of happy shoppers enjoyed a 20% discount (and stocked up on fall clothes) as well as a bright, clean, well laid-out store space. Here I am with Nicole of Le Mode Du Jour and Jen of Her Waise Choice. (Note that Jen is wearing the same blue lace H&M top I wore to the Vancouver Fashion eZine party and featured in this blog post.) The photo is from Jen's Facebook page, which you should definitely check out if you're curious what the store looks like. Or better yet, just drop by and shop.

My one purchase from that evening: an orange skinny belt with a gold buckle.

Last night, I was also at Birks to celebrate the launch of a fine jewelry collaboration between the Steve Nash Foundation and Roberto Coin. The capsule collection of 18 karat gold and diamond jewelry (priced at $420-3400) features earrings, pendants and even cufflinks shaped like hoops and basketballs. 40% of the proceeds go to the Steve Nash Foundation, a charity which assists underprivileged children.

"Hoops have always been a big part of my life in Canada, and to now have this line with Birks--such a big part of the Canadian landscape--feels very integrated into my Foundation's platforms here at home," Nash said of the collection. I loved the sense of fun and elegance in the basketball shape: even if you don't recognize it for what it is, it's just a lovely geometric design. My favourite pieces in the collection are the white gold and diamond basketball cufflinks.

Of course, the evening wasn't complete without a photo op with Steve Nash himself! He was very kind and down-to-earth.

The September issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

After a brief summer hiatus, Vancouver Fashion eZine is back with a packed September issue! For this issue, I had the privilege of interviewing Pernilla Ahrnstedt, a local jewelry designer who's been in the Vancouver fashion industry for two decades. Originally from Sweden, Pernilla relocated to Vancouver in 1988 for love. Her romantic relationship didn't last, but her relationship with this city did: she chose to stay here, study jewelry design, and set up shop. Pernilla's memories of Vancouver during the 90s show just how far this city has come in two short decades. I loved writing this piece for several reasons. First, I got to meet Pernilla, who was absolutely lovely in person. Second, at 900 words, this editorial piece was considerably longer than the 500-600 word articles I'm used to turning in for VFE.

Finally, this article is special for another reason: it marks my final assignment for VFE. After 3 print collectibles and 19 articles, I'm moving on to other projects. Kudos to my editor Marilyn Wilson for giving me the wonderful opportunity to write for a publication that shows the local fashion industry at its best. It's been a swell ride!

July issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

This month, I had the privilege of profiling Lola Home and Apparel, a lovely lifestyle/concept store, formerly of Yaletown, now located in the historic Sun Tower in the up-and-coming Crosstown neighbourhood. Owner Christina McDaniel does a fantastic job of stocking Lola with unique and eclectic treasures. Think fragrances, candles, shoes and pretty stationery. So what exactly does Lola want? You'll have to read the article to find out.

June issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

This month I had the pleasure of writing about Vancouver label Obakki, whose profile at the international level has risen dramatically since it was founded in 2005. A fall/winter show in a historic church with hundreds of guests, successful collection after successful collection, an eponymous philanthropic foundation, great strides in the world of social media...is there anything Obakki can't do? Read more about them here.

March issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

This month I got to interview talented makeup artist Eman Aziz. Known amongst local photographers for being able to create flawless complexions and versatile looks, Eman keeps busy teaching at VCC, preparing for editorial shoots, and preparing brides for their big day. Find out how she got into the industry and her top predictions for spring/summer beauty trends by reading the article here.

Hump Day Hodgepodge

Happy Wednesday everyone, and special greetings in particular to the new readers who've dropped by via Already Pretty! In case you haven't seen it yet, gorgeous blogger Sal of Already Pretty did a fantastic round-up post where bloggers discussed guidelines for work wear across the spectrum, including yours truly. Drop by and check out what we have to say about how we dress for our jobs, and do take the time to add your two cents to the comments.

If you're looking for something else to read, the February 2011 issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is now online. This month, I had the privilege of writing about dace, the eponymous local label by Dace Moore which is celebrating its tenth anniversary. So what do they have up their sleeve to commemorate this special milestone? You'll have to read the article to find out.

January issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

For this month's issue, I had the pleasure of profiling one of my favourite Gastown boutiques, LYNNsteven, and interviewing owner Nicole Dennis Durnin. How did she manage to start her own business in the midst of a recession and still achieve success? What sorts of hard-to-find labels and items does LYNNsteven stock? And what's the scoop on that changing room made entirely of paperback novels? You'll have to read the article to find out.

November issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

Hi everyone! I know I've been a little MIA from the blogosphere for the last couple of days, but the truth of the matter is I've had some soul-searching to do and some emotional baggage to deal with. I don't know what the outcome of this will be, but I am calmer now and moving forward in small steps.

If you're looking for something to read on a Friday afternoon, check out the latest issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine. (Funny enough, I talked to a friend recently who mistakenly thought that I was merely an interviewer for the magazine and I didn't write the articles that the interviews were intended for. So let me make it clear once and for all: I interview the subjects AND I write the articles!) This month I had the pleasure of interviewing and writing about Justine Brooks, a local jewelry designer who's been making beautiful sterling silver and beaded jewelry for six years. She's also a seasoned traveller to boot. Find out how her travels have influenced her as a designer by reading the article here.

Wedding Soirée 2010 giveaway winner, plus October issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is online now!

After tallying the entries from this post and choosing randomly, the winner of the two tickets to Weddingful's Wedding Soirée is...

Carolina from the blog Closet Full of Nothing

Congratulations Carolina! I'll be contacting you shortly via email with details on how you can claim your prize. For those of you who didn't win, don't be despondent. The giveaway for Crème de la Crème tickets is still happening until October 29th (click here to enter). And if you're looking for a shiny new bauble to cheer yourself up, enter my giveaway for a Marc by Marc Jacobs owl bangle here before October 18th.

In other news, the October 2010 issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is now online. This month I had the opportunity to interview a local designer whose work I've admired for a long time, Malene Grotrian. In the few years that her namesake line has been in business, Malene has accomplished a lot. She received the first standing ovation in Vancouver Fashion Week's history and was the only Canadian designer invited to show at New York Fashion Week in fall 2009. But behind her seemingly overnight success story is years of training, hard work, and a keen business sense. Want to find out more about this talented Danish-born, Vancouver-based designer? Click here to read my article (which just happens to be this month's cover story).

Ooh, and more VFE news: The second print edition is here. This high-quality publication collates the past year of articles and photography into one gorgeous glossy collectible. To get your own copy, order online or check the website to see which local retailers are selling it.

To my Canadian readers, have a fantastic Thanksgiving long weekend! What do you have planned?

TGIF Tidbits: Vancouver Fashion eZine & FMA Fashion Week

Thank goodness it's Friday! I don't know about the rest of you, but the four-day work week following a long weekend always feels much more tiring than it should. If you're dragging your heels this afternoon and looking for an excuse to procrastinate at work, check out the latest issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine. This month I had the opportunity to interview makeup artist and bodypainting specialist Dana Mooney who's already accomplished a lot in her field at a very young age. Click here to find out how she got into the industry and what her top fall/winter beauty and hair trends are.

Craving more local fashion? Then mark your calendars for FMA Fashion Week. This event kicks off with an opening gala on Sunday September 12th and continues for the rest of week, combining musical acts, fashion shows, dining, shopping, and special events. Check out their website for all the details and to purchase tickets in advance. Personally, I'm looking forward to the JC Studio and Malene Grotrian shows already.

Have a great weekend everyone!

July issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

This has been an insane week at work for me and I know I've been slacking on the blog front. If you're having an easy Friday at the office and want something to read--or simply want to procrastinate--hop on over to Vancouver Fashion eZine. This month I had the privilege of interviewing Jillian Rothert, a recent Blanche Macdonald graduate whose grad collection was inspired by the glory days of aviation. She envisioned urban professionals who like to fly planes as a hobby and look debonair doing it. Talk about a weekend getaway!

Still bored? Read my article in last month's issue of eZine where I interviewed Ayala of Ayala Moriel Perfumes. She was such a pleasure to meet and speak with--very passionate about what she does, and just a genuine, warm personality overall.

Enjoy!

May issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

In case you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, the latest issue of VFE is online! This month I got the chance to share my love of Two of Hearts with VFE readers by writing an article about their Boutique. Needless to say, my long collaboration with designers Jenny Yen and Tabitha Savoie made this assignment one which was close to my heart. If you want a glimpse of what's in store right now, click here to read my article.

Can't get enough of Vancouver fashion? You should check out my write-up of the third day of shows at Vancouver Fashion Week.

March issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

This month, I had the delightful chance to interview a new designer on the Vancouver fashion scene, Fala Chien. This young lady is also one of the owners of 4th Ave Boutique, a Kitsilano store devoted to promoting local designers and emerging international design talent.

What I found most inspiring about Fala's story was that she took a huge risk moving from Taiwan to Vancouver five years ago without knowing anyone here or speaking English. She then enrolled in fashion school and learned English along the way; it was often a difficult process, but she stuck to it. Out of the designers and industry insiders I've had the privilege of interviewing, none have had to overcome the same overwhelmingly hard language/culture barrier that Fala has, and to that I say bravo!

Would you like to read more about Fala? Click here for the full story. Enjoy!

February issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

This month I had the privilege of interviewing established luxury lingerie designer Christine Morton of Christine Vancouver. Having been in fashion for three decades, Morton has seen the Vancouver fashion industry expand and grow. Her pieces are sold in high-end boutiques and department stores like Neiman Marcus; Oprah and Salma Hayek are major fans.

Have I piqued your interest yet? If so, you can read the article here.

January issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out!

Happy New Year!

After a long, relaxing hiatus filled with blissful days of leisure, I've become reluctant to return to work and blogging, which explains why there's no post this morning. However, if you crave something to read on this post-vacation Monday, good news: the latest issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine is out! This month, I had the privilege of interviewing one of Canada's premiere design talents, Jason Matlo. Check out the article here.

I've been busy writing up a storm in other places! Check out my interview with makeup artist Marianna Scarola in the November issue of Vancouver Fashion eZine. When you're done with that, head over to Stylefinds and check out my farewell post, a review of the Obakki spring preview event that occurred last Thursday. Yes, folks, I will no longer be writing for Stylefinds. Sad, I know, but my life has picked up lately and new commitments are making demanding claims on my time.

Speaking of which, I'm now in charge of the new monthly newsletter for the Two of Hearts Boutique! This is an exciting step for me as I've never administered an email newsletter campaign before. The November newsletter has already gone out. However, if you're in Vancouver and would be interested in receiving regular updates about what's happening at Two of Hearts, leave me a comment on this post with your email address! And ooh, thanks for supporting me in this new endeavour.
