Eco Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011: Red Jade

When I think of Margarita Angelatos's line Red Jade, I think of attention to detail, immaculate and innovative construction techniques, luxurious sustainable fabrics, and limited yet sophisticated hues. All of those elements are still in evidence in her latest collection. But Angelatos also seems to be envisioning a "less is more, back to basics" aesthetic for the Red Jade woman.

The super-structured approach of collections past has given way to something softer and more subtle for spring. Tops in sheer drapey fabrics convey a slouchy insouciance. White tees and tanks--some with asymmetrical shoulders, ruching up a batwing sleeve, or an oversized ruffle on one shoulder--show a keen eye for detail and subtle variation.

That being said, there's also plenty for devoted Red Jade fans who crave structure to love. Cropped jodhpur trousers, the perfect little pair of dress shorts, and a white tank dress featuring a big shoulder ruffle and boxy squarish seams along the hem were my favourites.

It's been great to see Red Jade evolve from season to season since Angelatos won the Generation Next competition. The overall mood of the latest collection is self-assured, restrained, sophisticated and mature. After several years, the fledgling label is hitting its stride.

  2. Really pretty as always. I wonder if most of these eco designers are skipping VFW in favour of EFW.
